Welcome

Castle Cary is a small, attractive country town situated some 12 miles north-east of Yeovil and 24 miles south of Bath. It lies on the edge of rolling countryside between the Somerset Levels to the west and the high ridgeline of Penselwood to the east, halfway between the Mendip Hills and the Blackmore Vale. The main Paddington to Penzance railway line runs about a mile to the north.

The old part of Castle Cary, which is still the town centre and contains buildings like the Market House, the Round House and the old George Inn, runs along the foot of steep, grassy Lodge Hill, below where the castle used to stand. Most modern development has taken place on the gently rising land to the north, joining the town with the village of Ansford. About 2,000 people live in the town (about 3,000 including Ansford). The town is the main centre for a large area of South Somerset, with a wide range of shops and services, and free parking (unlike many other towns in the area). Castle Cary is a FairTrade town.

The aim of this website is to provide useful information about Castle Cary for residents and visitors. You can find out about the history of the town, its notable landmarks and local tourist attractions; you can consult a directory of local businesses and services, including accommodation providers; you can see details of forthcoming events, read a copy of the latest town newsletter, download copies of our tourism leaflets and find information about the Town Council and its activities.

We hope that you find this website useful. If you have any comments or suggestions for how it could be improved, please email [email protected].
